KGMU, or King George’s Medical University, is one of the biggest government hospitals in North India. It is in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, on Shah Mina Road, Chowk. The hospital has been serving patients since 1905 and today sees around 10,000 patients every single day across all departments.
The Neurology department is one of the most visited sections in the hospital. It deals with problems of the brain, nerves, and spinal cord. People come here from Lucknow and from many other cities and towns in UP and nearby states. Because so many patients visit, it is very important to know the schedule before you go.

The registration counter closes at 12 noon without any exception. If you arrive after that, you will not get a slip for that day and will have to come back the next working day.
Try to reach by 7:30 AM or 8:00 AM. The queue starts building up well before the counter opens at 8:30 AM. Patients who arrive after 9 or 10 AM often go back without a token because the day’s slots are already taken.

Go to the New OPD Building. This building is air-conditioned. Take the lift or stairs to the 3rd Floor. Your rooms are 301, 302, 305, and 306.
Some special clinics are held in Room 110 on the 1st Floor of the Neurology Department. This guide will tell you clearly each time you need to go to Room 110 instead of the 3rd floor.

Botulinum Toxin Clinic
This is not a regular OPD consultation. This is a treatment clinic for specific neurological conditions. Botulinum toxin injections are given for problems like severe muscle spasms, neck muscles pulling to one side, eyelid closing on its own repeatedly, and other movement problems that tablets have not been able to control.

Tests Done in the Neurology Department
After your consultation, the doctor may refer you for one or more of these tests. All of these are done within KGMU at government rates, which are much lower than private hospitals.
EEG – Brain Wave Test This records electrical activity in the brain. Used to diagnose epilepsy and other brain conditions. Two types are available: the regular 16-channel EEG and the more detailed 21-channel Video EEG, which is mainly used for epilepsy monitoring.
Nerve and Muscle Tests (NCS and EMG) NCS checks how fast your nerves carry signals. EMG checks muscle activity using a small needle. The department uses the Nihon Kohden Neuropack X1 MEB-2300 machine, which is the same equipment found in top private hospitals. Other tests on the same machine include F-Wave, H-Reflex, CTS for wrist nerve problems, Blink Reflex, SSR, RNST, and Evoked Potentials.
Transcranial Doppler (TCD) This checks blood flow inside the brain’s blood vessels. No surgery or injection is needed for this test. It is mainly used for stroke patients and people with blood circulation problems in the brain.
Neuroequilibrium Video-Oculography This is for patients with dizziness, balance problems, or abnormal eye movements. It records eye movement patterns to find the cause of these symptoms.
Physiotherapy Unit For patients recovering from stroke, nerve injury, or any condition causing weakness or difficulty in movement.
Speech Therapy Unit For patients who have lost or reduced speech ability after a stroke or any other brain condition.
Neurosurgery OPD (Different From Neurology)
A lot of patients confuse Neurology with Neurosurgery. Neurology treats brain and nerve problems with medicines, tests, and therapy. Neurosurgery is for conditions that need an operation.
If your Neurology doctor says surgery is required, you will be sent to the Neurosurgery OPD. It is also in the New OPD Block on the 3rd Floor but in different rooms, 321, 322, and 323.
Timing for all Neurosurgery days is 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

You do not need to visit the hospital just to register. Everything can be done from your phone at home.
You can also call to book by phone. This is useful especially for the Botulinum Toxin Clinic and Wednesday specialty clinics.
Go to ors.gov.in. Register using your mobile number or ABHA Health ID. Select KGMU Lucknow as the hospital. Choose Neurology as the department. Pick your date and time slot. Download the OPD slip and carry it on the day of your visit.

What to Carry When You Visit?
Bring all old prescriptions from any previous doctor. Carry earlier test reports like MRI scans, CT scans, EEG reports, and blood test results. Keep your Aadhaar card or any ID proof with you. If you booked online, carry your OPD slip. Keep some cash for test fees if your doctor refers you for any tests.
Old reports are very helpful for the doctor. They save time and prevent you from having to repeat tests unnecessarily.

Practical Tips
Reach by 7:30 AM. The line fills up fast and late arrivals often miss out on tokens for the day.
For Wednesday clinics, count which Wednesday of the month it is before leaving. Going on the wrong Wednesday means your clinic will not be running.
Always call before going, especially around public holidays. The schedule sometimes changes without prior notice on websites.
Patients coming from other cities should try to arrive in Lucknow a day before their planned OPD visit. The patient volume is very high and tokens are not guaranteed for anyone arriving late in the morning.
Parking at KGMU is very limited. Taking an auto-rickshaw or e-rickshaw is much more practical than bringing your own vehicle, especially during morning rush hours.
